Zoh Amba – “Eyes Full”
A familiar face in a new guise around here. You might be familiar with Zoh Amba from their work behind the sax or flute, having anchored the excellent Beings record a couple of years back and cropping up on everything from Myriam Gendron to Jim Whiite to their own excellent solo releases over the past few years. If you’re the Coachella-goin’ type, you might have even seen them behind Iggy Pop last month. On a new full length for Matador, Amba is out of the wind section and upfront with the guitar in tow. Applying their penchant for the unorthodox to a rock record, the new album twists the singer-songwriter formula into turpentine-soaked knots. “Eyes Full” strums and seethes, with Zoh acting as a conduit for raw emotion. The song pines, but not softly, wondering what it takes to finally garner a person’s full attention and fuller heart. The record rounds out a trio with fellow-Being Jim White on drums and Kevin Hyland on guitar. Zoh’s new record, Eyes Full, is out June 5th from Matador.
