Ned Collette – “Curious Thing”

A new single slips out this morning from RSTB fave Ned Collette. The Aussie singer-songwriter has been a bastion of heavy-hearted folk, skirting the fringes of pop for years, and his latest brushes faintly through the furrowed territory of Cohen and Oldham. The first single is a slowly building bloom that’s bolstered with guest vocals from Leah Senior. Atop atmospheric piano and a whisper of keys, the new song sidles through the speakers with a weighty grace.

Ned notes, “Curious Thing”, the first single from his forthcoming album Mixed Light, is probably the most straight-shooting love song of his whole catalogue, but who is he aiming at? There are hints – someone real, lost, now just a ghost, or “the world we’ve both outgrown” itself, or perhaps most simply, the tender muse. Within, fragile sentiments align with a depth of field where songwriting meets dusty, green-sleeved R&B. “I’ve seen the world in the slipstream of a dare, and that’s what scares me the most.” The new album, Mixed Light, is out August 28th.
