Esther’s Mood Ring

A pair of familiar names come together to give 2026 the meditative moment that it needs. Featuring labelmates Stefan Beck (Prairiewolf, Golden Brown) and Steve Targo (Nimbudala), Esther’s Mood Ring came together out of a mutual appreciation for each other, and over the years it evolved from long-distance file sharing to a full record. As would befit both artists’ catalogs, the mood in the ring is peaceful and serene. With a late night, pre-dawn atmosphere, the band’s debut patters onto the speakers with polyrhythms, lap steel, synths and a smoke ring aura. Anchored by two long, lingering pieces, the record starts its way into view with a slight Turareg wind, finding some footing in the shadows of desert blues before diving into the darkness of ambient textures and aqueous tones on “Rosy Maple Moth.”

Targo keeps the rhythms percolating throughout Dream Ecology, hand drums that hum along and push the record like river currents. Deeper in he takes the ukulele on a less traditional route, spiking the folk with a prickle of friction without ever losing ties to the somnambulant world that the pair has carefully constructed. That sense of dream is the most trenchant tether here, guiding the listener through a kind of seafoam fog that laps at the listener in waves. Both artists have been integral to a new wave of meditative psych and they cement that reputation here, melding their styles into a record that leads the listener on a transcendent journey through sleep, dream, and higher consciousness.
