Bill Orcutt – Four Louies Live

A fevered dive into friction from the always entrancing Bill Orcutt. Tackling one of the most covered songs in history, Orcutt doubles his Louies for a new 12″ that takes the ’60s classic as its blueprint, but does far more than just rifle through the song’s memorable riff. A dizzying, blistering rendition that utilizes repetition for a panic attack take that’s part Sisyphus, part prog daydream. The assembled band, featuring quite a few familiar names — Wendy Eisenberg, Alan Licht, Cyrus Pireh, Chris Corsano among them — takes the stage at Roulette to turn the song into a tornado in lockstep. It’s a fractious, riotous rip through riffs that don’t so much resolve as get on top of the listener and then morph into walls of squalls that feel somewhere between insistence and oblivion. Licht describes it all as much more intense on stage, and I have every inclination to believe him, but even on record this one is an experience that washes the listener clean and leaves a good ringing in your ears.
