Dummy – “Full Spectrum Dominance”

Very excited to see the return of Dummy today. The band has long been living in the seams between the baggy dance dynamics of BritPop’s most buoyant characters and the smeared-lens streaks of shoegaze. On their latest single they open up the dance floor even wider, still chewing on the edges of those dynamics but streaking even further towards the more experimental ends of late ‘90s dance pop. A slinking groove winds through the song, sparring with the shaggy beats as they underpin Emma’s crisp vocal hooks. This definitely feels like a crate-dug 12” unearthed and dusted off in decadent bliss. Pair it with sentiments of skepticism at AI’s totemic rise, and this becomes the throwback anthem we need for the end of Summer.
