Ryley Walker – “Carrier”

Site favorite Ryley Walker returns with an abrasive turn that feels just right. It’s been a few years since Walker’s been in the new release pile (save for this year’s drop into Gift Horse), but he’s got a new album lined up for AD93. With a corroded heart, the track loops pitched guitar through electronics to create a numb miasma of disaffection. The track balances restrained rage and bone-deep exhaustion; a nod to the day-wage erosion, the heartland heads who just want to get through, the tape-scratch experimenters, and the minimal-tone treaders. I’d say its as raw as Ryley’s ever sounded, but live listener’s would know I’m lyin’. It is a nice shade on him, though, and a perfect accompaniment to the tide that threatens to swallow 2026.
