Yoo Doo Right – “Doldrums, Doldrums, Eviler Than the Devil”

Last year brought an excellent collaboration from Montreal outfits Yoo Doo Right and Population II along with a Texan turn from Nolan Potter. The record quietly slipped out, but held a grip on the heads who heard if for some time. YDR return quickly with an album of their own, starting things off with the brooding build of “Doldrums, Doldrums, Eviler Than The Devil.” There’s a stark desperation to the track, a noir back alley burn that hurtles through the speakers like a Molotov through a motel window. Built on an oil slick of bass, the track grows until it burns. It flashes guitar grit and then settles down for the kind of 3 AM desert road ambience that’s either for the fleeing or the follower. The band’s got a way with intensity and it comes to a head in the Western expanses of their new album, Build and Rest by the Shepherd’s Light. The new record is out November 6th from Mothland.
