Sick Gazelle – “Hippies”
Catching up late on this one, but it’s well worth the listen if you too missed out on the new album from Chicago quartet Sick Gazelle. Bringing together some familiar names, Eric Block (Veloce) and Bruce Lamont (Yakuza) pair with Steve Shelley (Sonic Youth) and Douglas McCombs (Tortoise, BASIC) in their latest incarnation. The album finds its footing somewhere between post-rock, jazz, and a smeared glaze of shoegaze. Standout single, “Hippies” is an outlier though. The cut’s got a rush of post-punk in its veins, letting Shelley’s propulsive beat underpin squalls of sax and obscured vocals, coming on like Mi Ami doing Can covers. The rest of the album is an engrossing listen, a true testament to the assembled talent here. The record, Veld, is out now from Vampire Blues.
