Mixtape: 65 Minutes

A follow-up to a mix I did a little while back called (There Must Be) Some Alternative. That mix took inspiration from some of the’90s best compilations, from soundtracks like Singles to the No Alternative and DGC Rarities. This picks up the pace from that comp, digging into another constant source of joy from the era, late night spent sifting through 120 Minutes premieres, interviews, and new music. Shade MTV for what you will, but 120 Minutes was still a bright spot that felt like a gift if you grew up outside of college towns and city centers in the era. With a good dose of new grunge miners in mind, the mix also sorts through bands that are echoing the ‘90s brand of power pop that bumped against the grittier offerings of the decade over on the left dials of the college stations. This is another crop of new bands keeping the crunch of the ‘90s alive.
