The Yummy Fur

The Yummy Fur have come in waves over the years. They existed as an underground specter in their first incarnation, twitching on the sidelines with a devilishly deep bookshelf and a bagful of brittle riffs. They chewed on Eno and Cale, coursed through the fringes of Magazine and Wire, but remained a ribald refuge for those who found those too topline. Come the ‘00s the name began to pop into the reference guide for a new generation of indie pop pleasers, filling out the ranks of Cap Tracks and the twitchier ends of Castleface and In The Red. The plastic punch of their songs was a secret handshake for a new generation but still they remained absent, reforming here and there for live shows for the lucky and finally corralling a comp of essentials in 2019. Now, seventeen years after the last time they tipped onto tape, the band is back with the frayed feelings of Everybody Talks About The Weather. It feels like they never let the jitter n’ skitter out of their system.

The record seamlessly picks up right from their prime. The core trio of John McKeown, Brian MacDougall, and Paul Thomas return for the album, tapping right into the twitch that turned them on all those years back. The bookshelf hasn’t thinned out, with the band’s chewing tin and turbulence around Pynchon nods, pop culture fodder, and a xeroxed cultural stew. It’s an album that’s weathered but not jaded, at least no more than the band ever were. They’re still skewering society’s niceties, double-back bullshit, and 24-hour tripe and making it sound like they might jump out of their skin in the process. If you’re not caught up on the Fur at this point, hit up Piggy Wings and then slip sideways into Everybody Talks About The Weather. Smelling salts for the soul, the record slaps the cheek and chides the listener to grit their teeth and dip into the dirt for a while. Good to have ‘em back!
