BJ Cole & Secondson – “A Place You Could Never Leave”

Suturing the cosmic expanses to the clandestine worlds of non-traditional instrumentation, the new collaboration from BJ Cole and Secondson slips some of Cole’s ethereal pedal steel into the world of resonant glass. Secondson works with the Cristal Baschet, played by rubbing chromatically tuned glass rods with wet fingertips. Feeling more akin to synth tones than anything, the work of Secondson lays the bedrock here with Cole working his steel magic around their recordings. The result wavers between ambient country, Hawaiian hymns, and Eno’s tonal wonderlands. Opener “A Place You Could Never Leave,” transports the listener, an aural tug behind the ear and into another plane altogether. The new record, There Is Wonder Here, is out September 18th from Centripetal Force.
