Maya Ongaku – “Astral Echoes”

Another longtime favorite returns this week. Following an interim single, Japanese trio Maya Ongaku slip back onto the speakers with a more substantial offering this week, announcing a new album over at Guruguru Brain. The synth strains that saturated the last LP seem to have floated away in favor of a calmer countenance. A soft shuffle of percussion undercuts the band’s rainy day soul glow. Keys ring around the listener, vying for space in the meditative jazz chamber with flutes, sax, bells, bass, and the band’s humid vocal delivery. The song slows the pace of the day down to a slow simmer, glazing a molasses-thick throb over everything in their wake. The single helps crack into the new album, Nothing Space Music, which arrives on shelves in September with a digital tease in early August.
