The Thorn – “Darkest Part of Winter”
This only seems a fitting companion to the English bent of BRIAR, fellow travelers on the road towards furrowed folk. This song appeared as the b-side to the physical release of The Thorn’s excellent single “The Fountain,” a release that has only been available at shows up to this point. Now available digitally, “Darkest Part of Winter” takes up the reigns of scorched psych-folk that digs into the creosote and candlelight of ‘70s folk. Throwing shades of occult into the mix and mastering the duality of folk that melts into rock’s scorch, the song finds The Thorn at their most wind-battered and spectral. Aside from Sharp’s searing leads, the song is once again lofted on the wings of the excellent vocal delivery from Naomi Randall, who seems to have the kind of spell-bent charms that endeared songwriters from Sainte-Marie to Kathy Smith and Celia Humphris to audiences. The b-side is out now and highly recommended.
