SPELLMAN -“Philly Sweat”
One of my favorites from last year was a bit of a sleeper pastoral psych offering from Mike Spellman. The record slipped out quietly on Aural Canyon, but its haunted ambience paired his laid back guitar work with flutes in a way that proved endlessly enthralling. For the follow up the folk dissipates from the palette, but the guitars remain. On the opener, “Philly Sweat,” the ease from the debut is still threaded through Spellman’s works, but there’s a looser groove to the cut. Pitched somewhere between the spectral funk of Brightblack Morning Light and the kind of skeletal blues that permeated a few of John Carpenter’s ‘80s soundtracks, Spellman serves up something that touches the Kosmiche while still circling quieter corners. The new album is also slated for release on Aural Canyon. Floralia is out this Friday, May 22nd on digital and cassette.
