Soup Activists – “Johnny”

While I know they have a warm spot in many aughts hearts, and despite a penchant for fuzz-crusted punk in the Blogspot days, I never hit deep on Lumpy and the Dumpers. My loss, I assume. For the past few years, though, head Lump Martin Meyer’s left a bit of the debris behind for a slightly more pop path with Soup Activists. The band’s been growing some good ‘un in the gardens of their EP collection and with a new single and an album on the way for Feel It, the Activists hit hard with “Johnny.” A little glazed n’ hazed, but with a pop heart that comes coursing through, the new song is the best I’ve heard yet from Meyer. The hook hits hard and the dusted veneer is just right on the upcoming Where Rubbish Goes. The full record was recorded on with no pretense at a Masonic lodge in Dayton, KY, looping a little of that Midwest rust belt beleaguered bliss into its seams. Looking forward to this one! The new record is out November 13th on Feel It.
