Softjaw – “Love Can’t Kill Me”

It’s been a damn good year for power pop, and the ball keeps rolling with a new record from Long Beach’s SOFTJAW. The band leans towards the late ‘70s model, letting a little snarl into the mix, but for the most part stacking strum and harmonies with nods towards the Memphis pocket and the flash of Cheap Trick. They open up singles for the new LP with “Love Can’t Kill You,” a bright-lighted jangler that takes a bite out of ‘60s harmonies before dipping the guitars in crunch. It’s a breezy blast of pop that snags some summer sun even as we careen into Fall. The band’s new record, also titled Love Can’t Kill You, is out October 16th from favorite West Coast outpost Dandy Boy Records.
