Howlin Rain – “30th Century Man” (with Ty Segall)

I’ve waxed on a bit about this upcoming Howlin Rain album, a collector’s trove of covers that finds the band exploring some of their favorites. This time they bring on fellow West Coast luminary Ty Segall, always an ace with a cover himself, for a take on Scott Walker that feels reverent in its reconfiguration. The song steps off from the lonesome pine of the original but adds some of Ethan’s trademark scorch to the mix, lighting the second half on fire with explosive glee. The rest of the album doesn’t play precious with its heroes either, fitting new fire into works from Todd Rundgren, Judee Sill, Moby Grape, Fairport Convention, Tim Hardin, Mountain Bus and more. The new record, Watermelon, is out November 13th from Silver Current Records.
