Big Top – “Take Care”
Got a fun new single today from Portland band Big Top. The band features Elyse Schrock (Blues Lawyer) and Richard Alex Olsen (Venkman). The pair also run Playland Studio which brings a homespun charm to animation and production work. Their show The Big Box Set blends indie pop and cable access aesthetics, creating a space that’s somewhere between ‘70s Sid Kroft and Pee Wee’s Playhouse. The band brings the same homespun aesthetic to their new video, directed by Elyse, lacing animation and practical pieces into a cityscape that feels right out of a dream. Among the tangle of guitars and hint-of-honey harmonies, Big Top lodge a few hooks that hold on tight. “Take Care” sways in the sun, an easy strumming indie pop treat that’s prime fodder for West Coast jangle-pop lovers.
“The song was about a family friend who I was visiting with in LA and I found out a couple days later that he had passed away that night so I was the last person to visit with him,” recalls Elyse. “He was sick for a long time but still a very bizarre feeling. So the song is about loss, love and grief. The video is essentially depicting a broken tv finding peace and the big top tv repair shop is in a vague way being the after life. Take care was the last thing he said to me when he left.” The band’s new record, Peanut Pitch / Parterre Ep, is out October 16th 2026 on Musical Fanzine.
